Shelley Fabares, the actress who rose to fame on The Donna Reed Show and later starred in Coach, has died at 82 in Los Angeles.
Fabares’ family confirmed her death in a statement to The Hollywood Reporter, saying she was surrounded by those who loved her. Her husband, MASH* star Mike Farrell, was among the family members mourning her loss.
The family described Fabares as a devoted wife, stepmother and friend whose warmth, humor and generosity shaped the lives of those around her.
They asked for privacy while grieving and said her work and memories would continue to live on. Born Michele Ann Marie Fabares on Jan. 19, 1944, in Santa Monica, California, she began performing as a child.
Her television career started with an appearance on The Loretta Young Show at age 10 before she accumulated credits across several major television programs.
Her breakthrough came with The Donna Reed Show, where she played Mary Stone, the teenage daughter of Donna Reed and Carl Betz’s characters.
Fabares appeared in more than 190 episodes of the ABC sitcom between 1958 and 1965, becoming one of its best-known young stars.
Her popularity extended into music. Fabares recorded “Johnny Angel,” which reached No. 1 on the Billboard Hot 100 in April 1962 and sold more than a million copies.
She also transitioned successfully to film, appearing opposite Elvis Presley in Girl Happy, Spinout and Clambake during the 1960s.
Fabares continued working across television for decades, appearing in shows including The Twilight Zone, Mork & Mindy, The Love Boat, Newhart and Murder, She Wrote.
Her most enduring later role came in ABC’s Coach, where she played Christine Armstrong opposite Craig T. Nelson.
The sitcom ran from 1989 through 1997, earning Fabares two Primetime Emmy nominations for Outstanding Supporting Actress in a Comedy Series.
She also voiced Martha Kent in Superman: The Animated Series, introducing her work to another generation.
Fabares married recording producer Lou Adler in 1964 before their divorce in 1980. She married Farrell in 1984, and they remained together until her death. She is survived by Farrell and her stepchildren, Erin and Michael.
