Simone Biles Undergoes Medical Procedure Weeks After Health Scare

SUMMARY

  • Simone Biles shared an Instagram photo in a hospital gown following a procedure on July 22, accompanied by husband Jonathan Owens.
  • She has not disclosed what the procedure was for or whether it is connected to a health scare she described in June.
  • Biles called the June episode one of the scariest experiences of her life and has since resumed public appearances, including the 2026 ESPYS.

Olympic gymnast Simone Biles gave fans a health update on Thursday, sharing that she underwent a medical procedure on her husband’s birthday, roughly a month after she said she “almost died” during a frightening episode in June.

Biles, 29, posted an Instagram Story photo of herself in a hospital gown and cap alongside husband Jonathan Owens, an Indianapolis Colts safety.

“His birthday but he takes me to get my procedure,” she wrote, adding that she woke up from the procedure singing a line from a BossMan Dlow song.

The photo was taken July 22, Owens’ 31st birthday, indicating the procedure had already taken place by the time she posted.

Biles did not specify what the procedure involved or why she needed it, and she has not confirmed whether it is related to the health scare she disclosed the previous month.

On June 6, Biles told fans on Instagram that she had experienced a frightening medical episode, sharing an image of a hospital wristband.  “I’m not one to normally share things like this because I value privacy in today’s age.

But almost dying wasn’t on my bingo card earlier this week,” she wrote, calling it “one of, if not the scariest experience” of her life, made harder because Owens was away in Indianapolis for football practice at the time.

She said she had been resting in bed and would “explain sooner or later,” while thanking friends who reached out. In the weeks between the two posts, Biles largely kept the specifics private.

When a fan later commented asking for an update on the “near death experience,” Biles replied, “Not ready to talk about it just yet.”

She has since made several public appearances, including walking the red carpet with Owens at the 2026 ESPYS in New York City.

As one of the most decorated gymnasts in Olympic history, Biles’ health has drawn wide public attention, and the update comes amid broader speculation about her competitive future.

She has not confirmed retirement and has said she remains undecided about pursuing a fourth Olympic team.

Biles’ update comes during an active stretch for US gymnastics, with 2020 all around champion Suni Lee recently announcing her own competitive comeback, joining 2024 Olympic teammates Jade Carey and Hezly Rivera.

Former NCAA standout Katelyn Ohashi also returned to competition this year after a 13-year absence, adding context to questions about whether Biles will make a similar return.

Responding to a fan who pressed her for details on the health scare after she posted vacation content in the interim, Biles wrote, “Not ready to talk about it just yet.”

Biles has not announced a timeline for sharing further details about either the June health scare or the July procedure, and no statement has been made regarding her plans for future competition.
