Michelle Hadley and Ian Diaz got engaged and bought a condo together near Disneyland in Anaheim, California, in 2015, with Hadley covering the down payment.
The couple broke up that fall, and within months Diaz had married Angela Connell, who moved into the condo he’d shared with Hadley.
In 2016, Connell reported receiving threatening emails from a persona called “Lilithistruth,” including claims she was being stalked while pregnant with twins.
After Connell told police a masked intruder had assaulted her in their garage, investigators arrested Hadley, who was charged with felony stalking and related offenses.
She spent 88 days in jail before being exonerated in January 2017. The documentary details how a Department of Justice investigation, led by special agent Jason Higley, ultimately unraveled the case.
Investigators found Connell had fabricated a cancer diagnosis and the twin pregnancy, using images and a doctored sonogram pulled from online sources.
Digital forensics also traced the later “Lilithistruth” messages to Diaz’s own laptop, revealing he had impersonated the persona to frame his ex-fiancée and secure the condo.
The case has drawn renewed attention as a documented example of a wrongful arrest shaped by domestic abuse dynamics, an issue Hadley has since become an advocate for, speaking publicly about coercive control and financial abuse in relationships.
The film adds to Netflix’s recent run of true crime documentaries built around deception, including “The Perfect Neighbor,” “Maternal Instinct” and “The Crash.”
Unlike those titles, “A Toxic Love Story” is notable for not involving a death, even as it’s been called among the most bizarre entries in the genre.
The documentary raises, but does not resolve, whether Connell was herself manipulated by Diaz. Director Alexandra Lacey has said the filmmakers “will never be able to answer” that question with certainty, noting they intentionally avoided telling audiences how to interpret it.
