Netflix has canceled Ransom Canyon after two seasons, ending the Texas-set romantic drama just months after its second season premiered in July.
The series centered on rancher Staten Kirkland, played by Josh Duhamel, and musician Quinn O’Grady, portrayed by Minka Kelly.
Their relationship unfolded alongside conflicts involving several established ranching families in a close knit Texas Hill Country community.
Season 2 expanded Staten’s struggle over the Double K Ranch after he was removed as trustee of his family’s property.
Quinn, meanwhile, faced a choice between remaining in the small Texas town and returning to her former life in New York City. The cancellation follows a significant decline in viewing figures.
Season 2 recorded 4.1 million views during its opening week, compared with 7.2 million for the first season, according to figures cited by The Independent. Its second season also spent three weeks in Netflix’s Top 10.
April Blair created the series from Jodi Thomas’ book series. Alongside Duhamel and Kelly, the cast featured Lizzy Greene, Garrett Wareing, Marianly Tejada, Jack Schumacher, Casey W. Johnson, Philip Winchester and Justin Johnson Cortez.
Critical reception was mixed. Variety’s Aramide Tinubu praised the show’s entertainment value while noting that many story developments were predictable.
The Telegraph and USA Today were considerably harsher, comparing the series unfavorably with Yellowstone.
The show was initially promoted as a romantic Western in the vein of Yellowstone and Virgin River. Netflix’s decision places it among several scripted series canceled by the streamer this year.
