Prince Harry and Meghan Markle have returned to Britain with their children, but a letter issued on behalf of King Charles III confirms their royal status has not changed.
The couple returned to the United Kingdom in late August after several years living in California. Their children, Prince Archie and Princess Lilibet, have also been enrolled in British schools and are expected to begin classes in September.
The clarification came through a letter from the Lord Chamberlain, the senior official of the royal household.
According to Fox News, the message was circulated to senior government and military officials, Lord Lieutenants and members of Harry’s team to prevent uncertainty over how future Sussex appearances should be treated.
The letter states that the arrangement established when Harry and Meghan stepped back from royal duties in January 2020 remains in place.
Their move back to Britain therefore does not restore the official responsibilities they previously carried out on behalf of the monarch.
BBC reported that any engagements involving the Sussexes will take place in a private capacity rather than as official royal engagements.
Their charitable activities are similarly considered personal work, while their office will continue to operate separately from the Royal Household.
The couple also cannot use the styles “His Royal Highness” and “Her Royal Highness.” The letter describes their position as being similar to that of private citizens with commercial and charitable interests.
Harry and Meghan left the UK for North America in 2020 after stepping away from royal life. Their subsequent financial independence included Harry’s memoir Spare, while Meghan developed her own online food business.
Their return comes amid plans for the family to establish a private, nonroyal home outside London. The exact location has not been publicly disclosed.
Security and Charitable Work
Security arrangements remain separate from the question of royal status. The King’s letter directs operational security matters to the relevant police authorities.
While Harry’s concerns over protection in Britain remain subject to decisions by Ravec, the committee responsible for security arrangements involving royals and other public figures.
Harry is expected to continue supporting charitable causes, including the Invictus Games, which are scheduled to take place in Birmingham next year.
Royal expert Hilary Fordwich told Fox News that returning to Britain does not mean Harry and Meghan are regaining official royal roles.
Former King Charles III butler Grant Harrold also suggested Harry’s return could reflect a desire to spend more time with his father, although that motivation has not been confirmed by Harry.
The Sussexes are expected to make public appearances in Britain while supporting their charitable activities. BBC also reported that Meghan is considering a return to acting.
