Taylor Sheridan Exit Challenged Dutton Ranch, Says Cole Hauser

Cole Hauser has spoken publicly about the creative adjustments the cast faced while filming the first season of Dutton Ranch, the latest series in the Yellowstone franchise.

Hauser, who reprises his role as Rip Wheeler, told Film Inside NYC that production changed significantly after franchise creator Taylor Sheridan was no longer involved in the writers’ room. 

Although Sheridan remained an executive producer, daily creative responsibilities shifted to showrunner Chad Feehan and a new group of writers and directors.

According to Hauser, the transition required the cast to adapt quickly to an unfamiliar creative process.

“There were challenges,” Hauser said, explaining that the absence of Sheridan meant the cast had to build working relationships with new writers and directors while maintaining the show’s storytelling.

Hauser said the familiar faces on set, including co-star Finn Little, director Alexandra Voros, Kelly Reilly, and himself, provided some continuity during production.

The actor described the experience as demanding but rewarding. 

He said the cast concentrated on their performances rather than outside expectations surrounding one of television’s most recognized franchises.

Hauser added that the team worked hard to establish its rhythm with the new creative staff and said he was proud of what the cast accomplished during the season.

Dutton Ranch completed production on its first season earlier this month. The series represents the first project in the Yellowstone franchise not written by Taylor Sheridan, a notable change for the long running television universe.

While Sheridan continued as an executive producer, creative leadership shifted to Chad Feehan and a newly assembled writing team.

Hauser’s remarks follow separate comments from co-star Ed Harris, who recently told Variety that he was frustrated with how his character, Everett McKinney, was developed during Season 1.

Harris said he originally believed Everett would be one of the series’ four main characters but felt that expectation was not reflected in the finished episodes. 

He also expressed disappointment that a scene featuring his character singing was removed before release.

According to Harris, producers have told him his role is expected to expand when production resumes. He said Season 2 is scheduled to begin filming in February.

For viewers of the Yellowstone franchise, Hauser’s comments provide insight into the behind the scenes transition that accompanied a major creative change.
