Beyoncé has marked the 20th anniversary of her sophomore album “B’Day” with a 31-track digital deluxe edition featuring unreleased recordings, Spanish-language versions and newly remastered visuals.
The anniversary edition expands the original 13-track “B’Day” with rare recordings, remixes and Spanish-language material.
Among the new additions is “Cuerpo (Tumbao)” featuring Colombian singer Maluma, marking Beyoncé’s first collaboration with the artist.
The Maluma track samples Celia Cruz’s “La Negra Tiene Tumbao.” According to the release notes, Beyoncé has long admired Cruz and her pride in African culture. The song was produced by Beyoncé, Edgar Barrera and Casta, with Ali “Ali Ali” Alvarez serving as co-producer.
Another notable addition connects Beyoncé’s Houston roots with the legacy of Selena Quintanilla. “Irreemplazable (Como La Flor)” combines Beyoncé’s recording with previously released Selena vocals, after the late singer’s estate approved the duet.
Beyoncé has previously credited Selena as an inspiration for her 2007 Spanish EP “Irreemplazable.”
“B’Day” originally arrived on Beyoncé’s 25th birthday in 2006 and became a major step in her development as a solo superstar. The album produced singles including “Déjà Vu,” “Irreplaceable,” “Get Me Bodied,” “Green Light” and “Ring the Alarm.”
“B’Day” also earned Beyoncé the Grammy for best contemporary R&B album at the 49th annual Grammy Awards in 2007.
Its later deluxe edition added bonus recordings, Spanish versions and collaborations, including “Beautiful Liar” with Shakira.
For the anniversary release, Beyoncé remastered the music and videos, with the visuals recolored and finished in 4K. A revamped version of the “Déjà Vu” video featuring Jay-Z was released alongside the album.
The anniversary campaign began July 4 with the release of “Morning Dew (Donk),” followed by a remix package in August. A deluxe vinyl edition with a 60-page collectible booklet and anniversary CD was also released.
Jay-Z is scheduled to perform Sept. 4 at London’s Tottenham Hotspur Stadium as he commemorates anniversaries connected to “Reasonable Doubt” and “The Blueprint.” Fans are also awaiting whether Beyoncé will make a surprise appearance.
