An Amazon Air cargo flight operated by 21 Air overran a runway after landing at Miami International Airport on Sunday, Sept. 6, triggering a major emergency response and an airport wide ground stop.
The Federal Aviation Administration confirmed that Flight 7598 departed San Juan before overrunning the runway during its landing in Miami.
The 32 year old Boeing 767-300 was disabled at the northwestern end of the airport, according to Miami International Airport.
Miami-Dade Fire Rescue said the aircraft caught fire following the crash, with heavy flames and smoke visible at the scene.
Emergency crews were sent to extinguish the fire and assess people involved, although the supplied reports did not confirm whether anyone was injured.
Videos from the scene showed the cargo aircraft alongside a road with smoke surrounding the plane. The aircraft carried the Amazon arrow logo and was identified as an Amazon Prime Air flight by the airport.
The incident forced Miami International Airport to close its runways and taxiways, while a ground stop prevented other flights from taking off or landing.
Transportation Secretary Sean Duffy warned travelers to expect significant delays and possible cancellations. FAA data shows runway 30 is more than 9,000 feet long.
Flight-tracking information indicated the journey from San Juan to Miami took slightly more than two hours.
A review of air traffic control audio by CNN found that the pilots did not declare an emergency before landing.
The FAA said it will investigate the incident. Amazon confirmed that the aircraft was operated by 21 Air and said it was working with authorities while prioritizing the safety and care of those involved.
