Rocket League servers experience global outage on December 24

Gamers attempting to log into Rocket League on Christmas Eve faced widespread server issues, with players from multiple countries reporting connection problems and unexpected game disconnections, according to data from online monitoring platforms.

Psyonix, the developer of the popular vehicular soccer game, confirmed the downtime and provided multiple updates on efforts to restore services. “We are investigating an issue preventing players from logging into Rocket League.

We are working on a fix as soon as possible and will share an update once this has been resolved,” the studio said in a statement posted to its official social media channels.

About an hour later, Psyonix added, “We are still working on bringing Rocket League back online and restoring matchmaking to normal. Players currently logged in may see themselves kicked from the game while work to bring services back online.”

Rocket League, first released in 2015, has grown into a global esports and casual gaming phenomenon.

The title allows players to control rocket powered cars and compete in soccer style matches. Server outages can significantly impact both casual players and professional esports competitions.

The holiday season is traditionally a peak period for online gaming traffic, and December 24 saw a surge of players attempting to access the game, likely contributing to the strain on servers.

Downdetector, a service that tracks online outages, recorded a dramatic spike in reports, with users from North America, Europe, and Asia reporting connectivity problems.

This outage coincided with the release of new seasonal content, including the DeLorean time machine vehicle from Back to the Future and Frosty Fiest challenge rewards.

Which grant festive items such as the Hot Cocoa Antenna and magical Hogwarts themed rewards like the Sorting Hat Topper and house specific boosts.

“These updates are meant to enhance player experience during the holidays, but unfortunately, the server issues prevented many from accessing them,” said Daniel Greene, a gaming analyst at Digital Play Insights.

Gaming industry experts note that server outages during high traffic periods are increasingly common.

“Even established studios like Psyonix face challenges during peak gaming hours, especially when rolling out new content simultaneously,” said Samantha Li, a network infrastructure specialist.

“Load spikes, database errors, or unexpected bugs can result in temporary service interruptions.” Psyonix’s transparency in updating players reflects a broader trend in gaming communications.

Studios are increasingly using social media and dedicated status pages to provide near real time updates. “Players appreciate timely updates, even if the service is down. It reduces frustration and uncertainty,” Li added.

Historically, Rocket League has experienced occasional service disruptions during major updates or esports events.

In August 2024, a server outage lasted for nearly six hours following a content release, impacting global matchmaking. Compared to that incident, the December 24 outage appears to be shorter but still affects thousands of players trying to engage with holiday themed content.

Online forums indicate that affected players ranged from casual gamers to competitive players preparing for esports tournaments.

Users reported intermittent connectivity, sudden disconnections, and delays in matchmaking. Many players expressed disappointment at missing limited time rewards associated with holiday challenges.

“I was excited to try the new DeLorean vehicle, but I couldn’t even log in for thirty minutes,” said Jason Morales, a 24 year old gamer from Chicago. “It’s frustrating, especially on Christmas Eve when I had some free time to play.”

In Germany, esports participant Lena Fischer echoed similar concerns. “We were practicing for a holiday tournament, and the server downtime disrupted our schedule. Psyonix updates were helpful, but we still lost valuable practice time,” Fischer said.

Psyonix did not provide a specific timeline for complete restoration, but the company emphasized its commitment to resolving the issues promptly.

Industry analysts suggest that while server outages are inevitable during high traffic periods, ongoing infrastructure upgrades and robust testing can help reduce their frequency.

“Studios need to balance new content releases with server capacity planning to avoid repeat incidents,” said Greene.

Players can expect normal matchmaking and login capabilities to return once the underlying technical issues are resolved. Psyonix’s dedicated status page continues to provide updates on ongoing restoration efforts.

The Rocket League server outage on December 24 disrupted gameplay for users around the world, coinciding with a surge in holiday traffic and the launch of new seasonal content.

While Psyonix actively addressed the problem, players faced temporary disconnections and login issues. Experts note that such outages are common in online gaming during peak periods, and ongoing infrastructure improvements are essential to minimize future disruptions.
