Prince Harry and Meghan Markle have returned to the U.K. for an extended period, but their plans remain unclear to members of the royal family, PEOPLE reports.
The Duke and Duchess of Sussex’s return has created a new chapter in their relationship with the British royal family. PEOPLE reports that King Charles learned about their plans only days before the move became public.
A palace insider told PEOPLE that the royal family does not yet understand the couple’s motives for spending an extended period in Britain.
The uncertainty comes despite Harry having met his father, King Charles, with Meghan and their children at Highgrove in July.
Harry has also spoken with Charles at least once since returning to Britain, although the two have not met in person during the current stay.
The King’s position on the Sussexes was clarified in a Sept. 7 letter issued through the Lord Chamberlain. It reiterated that Harry and Meghan are no longer working members of the royal family and retain financial independence and privacy protections.
Royal author Russell Myers said Charles and Prince William are united on the Sussexes not representing the monarchy. William and Harry, meanwhile, remain estranged.
Harry previously told the BBC that he wanted reconciliation with his family and saw little value in continuing their conflict.
Royal historian Amanda Foreman said the uncertainty surrounding Harry and Meghan could remain difficult for William and Kate Middleton, while Simon Vigar identified next year’s 30th anniversary of Princess Diana’s death as one possible opportunity for reconciliation.
For now, the Sussexes’ long-term plans in Britain remain unclear.
