Lena Dunham and her husband, Luis Felber, have welcomed their first child, a daughter born via surrogate, marking a new chapter for the couple.
Dunham, 40, revealed the birth in a Wednesday op-ed for Vogue, sharing that she and Felber are now parents to a baby girl. The couple is currently in the United States and plans to return to their home in North London, where Felber is from.
The arrival follows years in which Dunham has spoken publicly about her hopes of becoming a mother.
In an April appearance on Today with Jenna and Sheinelle, she described grieving the possibility of having children after undergoing a hysterectomy because of severe endometriosis.
Dunham underwent the hysterectomy in 2017 at age 31. She later wrote about additional reproductive health complications, including surgery involving her remaining ovary, which she said had been affected by extensive scar tissue.
During an interview with The Times in July 2025, Dunham said she and Felber were working on expanding their family in new ways.
She also described her hysterectomy as both a source of grief and relief while explaining that she wanted to safely meet her future children before discussing the journey publicly.
Dunham and Felber married in September 2021. PEOPLE reported that Dunham had previously spoken about building a family differently from how she once imagined, including the emotional adjustment that followed her surgery.
The birth marks a major personal milestone for Dunham, whose career includes creating and starring in Girls as well as writing books and screenplays. She has previously said that motherhood had been an important part of how she imagined her future.
