Carrot Top, the stage name of comedian Scott Thompson, is recovering in a Las Vegas hospital after a reported suicide attempt, according to TMZ. His scheduled Friday night performance at the Luxor was canceled.
TMZ reported that the 61-year-old comedian was rushed to a local hospital in the Las Vegas area on Friday. The report said the hospitalization followed a suicide attempt.
Thompson’s representative, Jami Schlicher, confirmed to TMZ and TheWrap that he is recovering in the hospital and receiving care and support. She said his family and those closest to him appreciate the concern and requested privacy.
TheWrap noted that Thompson’s representative did not address the specific circumstances reported by TMZ. That distinction leaves the reported attempt attributed to TMZ rather than independently confirmed in the representative’s statement.
Carrot Top has built his career around prop-based comedy, combining elaborate stage items with material about pop culture, music and current events.
His television and comedy credits include Star Search, Comic Strip Live, Scrubs, Reno 911! and George Lopez. His Las Vegas career has been particularly prominent.
Thompson has performed at the Luxor since 2005, and TheWrap described the residency as the longest-running in Las Vegas. He also recorded the comedy special Carrot Top Rocks Las Vegas at the MGM Grand in 2003.
