Anne Carson Wins 2026 Nobel Prize in Literature

Canadian poet, essayist and translator Anne Carson has won the 2026 Nobel Prize in Literature, recognizing a body of work that blends classical Greek traditions with innovative forms of contemporary writing.

The Swedish Academy announced Carson as this year’s laureate on Thursday, praising her ability to challenge literary conventions through writing that crosses the boundaries between poetry, fiction, translation and scholarly criticism.

Anders Olsson, chairman of the academy’s Nobel Committee for Literature, said Carson had moved beyond traditional lyrical poetry to develop new approaches to contemporary literature.

Her work frequently connects ancient Greek texts with modern experiences, using different genres and artistic forms to explore language, desire and human relationships.

Carson was in Iceland when she received the news by telephone from Ingrid Carlberg, the academy’s permanent secretary.

Speaking to Icelandic public broadcaster RUV, she jokingly described the judges as “crazy” for selecting her, expressing surprise at the recognition.

Born in Toronto in 1950, Carson has spent more than four decades developing an unconventional literary career.

Her first book, Eros the Bittersweet, published in 1986, examiLned desire through the lens of ancient Greek literature.

One of her best-known works, Autobiography of Red, published in 1998, reimagines a Greek myth as a modern coming of age story told in verse.

Her 2010 book Nox takes a different approach, presenting a reproduction of a notebook she assembled following her brother’s death in an accordion-fold format

Other notable works include The Beauty of the Husband, which won the T.S. Eliot Prize in 2001, and Float, a collection demonstrating her interest in experimental literary forms.

Her engagement with classical literature has also extended to theatrical adaptations and translations, including Sophocles’ Elektra.

Carson’s recognition drew congratulations from Canadian Prime Minister Mark Carney, who described the achievement as a proud moment for Canada.

He praised her distinctive style and her ability to introduce ancient stories to new audiences.

The Nobel Prize in Literature recognizes an author’s overall contribution rather than a single publication.

Carson will receive 12 million Swedish kronor, along with the Nobel medal and diploma, at the ceremony in Stockholm in December.
