Hundreds of mourners gathered Monday at Center Pointe Church in Ocean Springs, Mississippi, to celebrate the life of Nolan Wells, an 18 year old whose death following a Fourth of July boating trip has drawn national attention and intensified calls for answers.

Family, friends, classmates, and nearly the entire Ocean Springs High School football team attended the service.

Many wore black and blue, the colors of Wells’ football team, in accordance with the family’s request.

Before the funeral began, attendees viewed a slideshow featuring photographs of Wells with friends and family accompanied by gospel music.

Civil rights leader Rev. Al Sharpton delivered the eulogy, while attorney Ben Crump, who represents the Wells family, addressed the congregation’s continued demand for justice.

During the service, Wells’ mother, Christine Wells Wonsley, thanked God for the 18 years she shared with her son, describing him as compassionate, welcoming, and someone who made others feel valued.

She said he possessed a calm spirit and encouraged those attending to “be the light” in honor of his memory.

His father, Elmore Wonsley, remembered Wells as a respectful young man and a positive role model for his younger brothers.

Ocean Springs High School football coach Jake Bramlett also reflected on Wells’ influence, saying he mentored younger teammates both on and off the field and left a lasting impact on the program.

The funeral came as authorities continue investigating the circumstances surrounding Wells’ death.

Wells disappeared on July 4 after traveling with friends to Horn Island off Mississippi’s Gulf Coast.

According to those with him, he remained on the island after the group returned to the mainland, saying he planned to find another ride later.

After he failed to return home, his mother reported him missing around midnight. A US park ranger discovered his body on the island’s northwest shore on July 6.

Officials have not released an autopsy report, and the cause of death has not been confirmed.

Crump said the Wells family has launched its own investigation and commissioned an independent autopsy.

He previously stated that former NFL quarterback Colin Kaepernick paid for the independent examination, while filmmaker Tyler Perry covered funeral expenses.

The case has received widespread public attention as investigators work to determine how Wells died.

Until official findings are released, questions surrounding the circumstances of his death remain unanswered.

The funeral highlighted the strong community support surrounding the Wells family.

Along with classmates, coaches, and friends, national civil rights figures joined local residents in honoring Wells while emphasizing the family’s continued pursuit of information through both official and independent investigations.

Wells was widely remembered by family, coaches, and friends as a supportive teammate and positive influence.

His football coach said younger players looked up to him, while longtime friend Daniel Pickens described him as someone who brought positivity wherever he went.
