Taylor Swift made a surprise appearance during Dakota Johnson’s Saturday Night Live monologue, turning a joke about Johnson’s dating history into a playful exchange.
Taylor Swift made an unexpected appearance on Saturday Night Live on Oct. 3, joining host Dakota Johnson during the opening monologue.
Johnson, hosting SNL for the third time, built part of her routine around her history of dating musicians.
She joked about going through two highly publicized breakups since her previous hosting appearance and credited her friends with supporting her without judgment.
That setup led to Swift’s entrance after Johnson introduced the singer as her “literal therapist.”
Swift rejected the description, joking that Johnson instead visits her home with an empty wine bottle, talks about her personal life and eventually leaves with Pedialyte and a ride from Swift’s security.
The exchange also connected to Johnson’s earlier jokes about musicians. She said she was effectively doing a public service by dating them and joked that she was saving women money on Zoloft.
She then referenced America, England, parts of Ireland and Cleveland, prompting Swift to add “Allegedly.”
The Cleveland reference was a playful nod to Swift’s husband, Kansas City Chiefs tight end Travis Kelce, who has ties to the Cleveland area.
Swift’s appearance also reunited her with Johnson shortly after the two worked together on the music video for “Patient Zero,” one of the new songs from Swift’s expanded The Life of a Showgirl: The Encore. Johnson and Colin Farrell star in the video, which Swift directed and co-starred in.
Swift’s SNL appearance marked her return to the program after she introduced Ice Spice during an October 2023 episode. Her cameo also followed the release of the expanded The Life of a Showgirl: The Encore on Sept. 25.
Johnson’s monologue included another callback to her previous SNL appearance. She joked about returning to the show while still dealing with the commercial performance of Madame Web, the film she had been promoting during her previous hosting stint.
The episode marked Johnson’s third time hosting SNL, following appearances in 2015 and 2024.
