Jamie Lee Curtis Says Whirlwind Marriage to Christopher Guest Inspired ‘Newlyweds’

Jamie Lee Curtis has revealed that her decades-long marriage to actor and filmmaker Christopher Guest provided inspiration for her new NBC sitcom Newlyweds.

Speaking during an NBCUniversal Backlot Pass panel on Aug. 10, Curtis, 67, explained that the relationship between her and Guest influenced the show’s exploration of people who come together later in life and discover how to build a life with someone whose personality may be very different from their own.

Curtis described the beginning of her relationship with Guest as unusually fast. She said she first saw his photograph in Rolling Stone while reading a story about This Is Spinal Tap.

Curtis later recalled that she told writer and producer Debra Hill, “I’m gonna marry that guy.”The two eventually went on their first date at Chianti Ristorante on Melrose in Los Angeles in July 1984.

Curtis has said they fell in love by August, Guest proposed the following month, and they married on Dec. 18, 1984 only six months after their first date.

Curtis offered another surprising detail about the early days of their relationship during the Newlyweds panel. She said she and Guest had never spent more than 72 hours together at one time before their wedding.

“We were strangers when we married,” Curtis said, explaining that they had to discover many aspects of each other’s personalities after becoming husband and wife.

The actress joked that she eventually realized Guest was a quiet person, despite the limited opportunity they had to learn about each other before marrying.

Their contrasting personalities became part of what Curtis said made their relationship and the themes of Newlyweds interesting.

Why ‘Newlyweds’ Draws From Their Experience

Curtis said she and the show’s creators became interested in the idea of people in their 60s entering relationships after already having spent much of their lives developing connections and responsibilities of their own.

She described the appeal of watching people who are already established in life attempt to understand one another and decide whether they can move forward together.

In Newlyweds, Curtis plays Claudia alongside Tea Leoni, who plays Jeanie. Curtis said the series ultimately aims to explore what happens when people at a later stage of life begin figuring out how to share that life with someone else.

Curtis has previously acknowledged that her marriage has not always been easy. In a 1991 PEOPLE interview, she described it as a “difficult, but successful marriage.”

That perspective has remained central to how Curtis talks about her relationship with Guest.

Rather than presenting longevity as the result of avoiding conflict, she has emphasized remaining committed through difficult periods and allowing circumstances to change over time.

In a December 2024 interview with Entertainment Tonight, Curtis said the key to a lasting marriage was essentially not leaving when things became difficult.

She compared marriage to a recovery saying: “If you stay on the bus, the scenery will change.”

Curtis explained that relationships can move through periods when couples struggle with each other before circumstances shift again.

She credited perseverance, patience and gentleness as important parts of maintaining a long-term partnership, while acknowledging that difficult feelings can also be part of marriage.

Jamie Lee Curtis and Christopher Guest

Curtis and Guest have been married since 1984 and have two children, Annie and Ruby. Curtis has repeatedly returned to the story of their first meeting when discussing the relationship.

Her account of seeing Guest’s photograph before they had met became an important part of their public love story.

The unusually short period between their first date and wedding also contrasts with Curtis’s later description of the marriage as one built through years of shared experiences.

The couple’s relationship has therefore evolved from a rapid decision to marry into a partnership Curtis says required continued commitment as they learned more about each other. Curtis’s comments offer context for Newlyweds beyond its fictional storyline.

Her own experience illustrates the central idea she says the sitcom explores: people can enter relationships with limited knowledge of one another and still spend years discovering how to live together.

For Curtis, the experience has also shaped her understanding of what makes a marriage endure.

Her comments suggest that longevity is less about having an effortless relationship and more about continuing to work through changing circumstances.
