Mike & Molly star Billy Gardell said his 2021 bariatric surgery likely saved his life after Type 2 diabetes and other health concerns prompted him to make a major change.
During a Sept. 22 episode of the Breaking Bread podcast, Gardell, 57, discussed the health problems that pushed him to reconsider his long-running struggle with weight. He said his doctor jokingly told him that “after 50, the warranties start running out.”
Gardell said his weight repeatedly fluctuated by about 30 pounds over the years. During Mike & Molly, which ran from 2010 to 2016, he reached 375 pounds, while his weight later fell to 275 pounds during Bob Hearts Abishola, which aired from 2021 to 2024.

The actor said his decision to undergo bariatric surgery was also influenced by his children. He explained that he wanted to remain physically capable after years of professional success rather than eventually becoming unable to perform basic activities independently.
Ozempic and Surgery
Gardell also recalled taking Ozempic for about a year in connection with his Type 2 diabetes. He said he lost roughly 12 pounds while using the medication and was featured as a spokesman during that period.
After the campaign ended, Gardell chose surgery because he wanted a broader change. He acknowledged that the procedure had downsides but said he remained satisfied with the decision.
Gardell said the impact has extended beyond his weight. He described being able to travel with his family, sit comfortably in the middle seat on airplanes, shop at a mall and tie his shoes normally as meaningful improvements in his daily life.
