Westbrook announced his decision Wednesday through a tribute video narrated by Michael B. Jordan.
In the accompanying message, he reflected on the end of his playing career, writing that sometimes the ending arrives before you realize you have witnessed it.
Selected fourth overall by the Oklahoma City Thunder in the 2008 NBA Draft, Westbrook became an All-Star in his third season.
His defining individual achievement came during the 2016-17 season, when he won the NBA MVP award after becoming the first player since Oscar Robertson to average a triple double for a full season.
Westbrook ultimately recorded four triple double seasons across five years, transforming the statistical milestone into a defining part of his career.
He also earned nine All-NBA selections, won two scoring titles and led the league in assists three times.
Westbrook spent the 2025-26 season with Sacramento, averaging 15.2 points, 5.4 rebounds and a team best 6.7 assists across 64 games. He added six triple doubles, taking his career total to 209.
During his final season, Westbrook also moved into fifth place on the NBA’s all-time assists list and became the first guard to surpass 9,000 career rebounds.
His career totals ultimately reached 27,176 points, 9,025 rebounds and 10,351 assists. He and LeBron James are the only players in NBA history to surpass 25,000 points and 10,000 assists.
Westbrook began his career in Oklahoma City and spent his first 11 seasons with the franchise.
He later played for the Houston Rockets, Washington Wizards, Los Angeles Lakers, Los Angeles Clippers, Denver Nuggets and Sacramento Kings.
Although he never won an NBA championship, Westbrook established himself as one of the defining players of his generation.
He was selected to the NBA’s 75th Anniversary Team and is widely regarded as a future Hall of Famer.
