LOS ANGELES — Los Angeles police are investigating the deaths of two people at a residence linked to actor and filmmaker Rob Reiner in the Brentwood neighborhood, officials said Sunday. The incident has raised questions in the community as authorities continue their investigation.
The Los Angeles Police Department responded to a call near the intersection of South Chadbourne Avenue and Hanover Street shortly after 3:30 pm on Sunday, December 14. Upon arrival, officers discovered two people dead at the location, police said.
Public records indicate the property under investigation is owned by Reiner, known for directing films including A Few Good Men and When Harry Met Sally. Police have not confirmed whether Reiner was involved in the deaths or if he was at the home during the incident.
No arrests had been made as of Sunday evening, and officials did not provide details on the cause of death. “We are treating this as an active investigation,” said LAPD spokesperson Lt. Maria Sanchez. “We cannot confirm identities or circumstances until we complete our initial assessment.”
Rob Reiner, 76, has not made a public statement regarding the situation. Representatives for the actor and filmmaker did not immediately respond to requests for comment.
Experts in criminal investigations stress that early reports in high-profile cases often contain limited information. “In cases involving celebrity properties, media attention can outpace official facts,” said Dr.
Elena Martin, a criminal justice professor at the University of Southern California. “Investigators need time to establish cause of death and determine whether foul play is involved.”
Psychologists note the potential impact on neighbors and the broader public when incidents occur at prominent residences.
“Communities react strongly when celebrities are involved, regardless of whether they are directly connected,” said Dr. Kevin Liu, a behavioral science expert. “Rumors can spread quickly before facts are confirmed.”
According to LAPD records, Brentwood has seen a relatively low incidence of violent crime in recent years compared with other Los Angeles neighborhoods.
From January to November 2025, the area reported 23 violent crimes, including assaults and homicides, compared with over 1,200 in South Los Angeles during the same period.
Incidents involving deaths at private residences connected to high profile figures are rare but attract significant media scrutiny. Experts note that such coverage can influence the pace and transparency of police reporting.
Neighbors expressed shock over the incident. “It’s unsettling to hear about something like this happening right on our street,” said Linda Harper, who has lived in Brentwood for 14 years. “We don’t know anything yet, and it’s hard not to speculate.”
Another local resident, Jamal Thompson, said, “I’ve seen police cars and crime scene tape, but I have no idea what actually happened. It feels strange to be living next to a celebrity home and have this kind of tragedy occur.”
Authorities said the investigation is ongoing, with detectives expected to review forensic evidence, interview witnesses, and examine the property for further clues. Officials have not provided a timeline for releasing additional information.
Experts caution that it may take days or weeks before the public learns more. “Investigations of this nature, particularly involving celebrity residences, require careful handling to avoid misreporting,” said Dr. Martin.
The Rob Reiner house deaths remain under investigation as Los Angeles police work to determine the identities of the two victims and the circumstances surrounding their deaths.
While authorities have provided few details, the case has already generated concern among neighbors and in the wider public. Police have urged patience as the inquiry continues.
