Putin invited to Trump backed Board of Peace for Gaza as US seeks wider coalition

KEY POINTS

  • The Board of Peace for Gaza is designed to monitor a ceasefire and coordinate rebuilding.
  • Moscow said it is reviewing terms before responding.
  • Israel has objected to how the council was announced.

Russian President Vladimir Putin has received an invitation to join the US Board of Peace for Gaza, the Kremlin said Monday, a step that could alter diplomacy on the Israel Hamas ceasefire.

The outreach underscores Washington’s effort to expand participation in the Board of Peace for Gaza, announced last year by President Donald Trump. The panel is meant to oversee compliance and humanitarian access.

Kremlin spokesman Dmitry Peskov told news agency TASS that Putin received the offer through diplomatic channels.

We are currently studying all the details of this proposal,” he said, adding that Moscow would seek clarifications from US officials.

The move comes as Russia remains at war with Ukraine, a factor that has complicated its standing in multilateral forums.

Bloomberg reported that Prime Minister Mark Carney of Canada and Argentine President Javier Milei were invited.

The Associated Press said Hungary, India, Jordan, Greece, Cyprus and Pakistan confirmed invitations.

A draft charter cited by Bloomberg proposes a payment of one billion dollars for permanent membership.

Analysts say the invitation reflects a US calculation that broader buy in could mobilize funding.

They also point to questions about enforcement and the role of regional governments, warning that credibility will hinge on clear rules.

Peskov said Moscow would “contact the US side to clarify all the details.” Israel signaled displeasure with the rollout.

Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu’s office said the executive board announcement “was not coordinated with Israel and runs contrary to its policy.” The White House has not confirmed invitation.

Diplomats expect weeks of consultations as invitees assess legal obligations, funding terms and the council’s authority.

The potential inclusion of Putin in the Board of Peace for Gaza highlights Washington’s attempt to internationalize stewardship of Gaza’s future.

Whether the model can bridge rivalries, secure resources and maintain a ceasefire will shape its standing.

In my analysis, the Board of Peace for Gaza signals a shift toward transactional multilateralism, where legitimacy is tied to flows and reconstruction leverage.

I predict a donor governance framework emerging. Civilians see this shape aid access.
