Lucian Piane’s Death Ruled an Accident at 46

Lucian Piane, the composer and music producer behind numerous RuPaul’s Drag Race songs, died at 46 after being struck by a vehicle in Glendale, California. The medical examiner ruled his death an accident.

Lucian Piane, whose compositions helped shape the musical identity of RuPaul’s Drag Race, died early Monday following a pedestrian collision in Glendale, California.

The Los Angeles County Medical Examiner determined that his death was accidental, with blunt trauma listed as the cause. The investigation remains open.

The Glendale Fire Department said emergency crews responded to a reported vehicle-pedestrian collision near San Fernando Road and Harvard Street at approximately 4:15 a.m. Despite lifesaving efforts, the adult patient died at the scene.

Authorities did not initially identify the pedestrian. Glendale police said the pedestrian was walking in the road at an intersection when a vehicle struck him.

Officers found no evidence of driving under the influence, speeding or running a red light. The medical examiner’s investigation into Piane’s death remains ongoing.

Piane worked on the early seasons of RuPaul’s Drag Race, composing musical numbers including “Shade: The Rusical,” “Rucapella” and “Glamazonian Airways.” He also contributed to the show’s theme music and finale performances.

His collaboration with RuPaul extended beyond the television series. Piane co-wrote and produced songs including “Cover Girl,” “Sissy That Walk,” “Born Naked” and “The Beginning.”

Outside the franchise, Piane worked with composer Marc Shaiman on projects including Hairspray, Team America: World Police and the 76th Academy Awards.

His work on the Hairspray film soundtrack earned a Grammy nomination and an RIAA Platinum Album Award.

Before his death, Piane was taken into custody by Glendale police on Oct. 10 in connection with an alleged controlled substance related incident.

He was detained again the following day over an alleged assault involving an officer or emergency personnel. He received citations in both cases and was given an Oct. 12 court date.

These incidents were separate from the circumstances of the fatal traffic collision. Authorities have not announced that the earlier allegations were connected to his death.
