CHIBA, Japan — Dragon Ball Super: The Galactic Patrol has been officially announced as a new anime series continuing the story of the Dragon Ball Super franchise, according to Toei Animation.

The reveal took place on January 25, 2026, during the Genkidamatsuri event at Makuhari Messe in Chiba, Japan, celebrating the series’ 40th anniversary.

The series will follow the events after the Tournament of Power, featuring protagonists Goku and Vegeta joining forces with the Galactic Patrol.

An intergalactic peacekeeping organization, to confront a new enemy known as Moro, dubbed the “Planet Eater” in promotional materials.

Legendary voice actress Masako Nozawa, Goku’s Japanese voice, and Akio Iyoku, executive producer of Dragon Ball, were present at the announcement.

The announcement marks the first new Dragon Ball Super anime project in over eight years since the original TV series ended in March 2018.

Fans have long awaited a continuation that animates the manga’s post-Tournament of Power arcs.

The Dragon Ball franchise, created by Akira Toriyama in 1984, has grown into one of the most influential manga and anime properties worldwide.

The original Dragon Ball series ran from 1984 to 1989, followed by Dragon Ball Z from 1989 to 1995.

The Dragon Ball Super manga began serialization in 2015 and continues to introduce storylines such as the Galactic Patrol Prisoner Arc and Granolah the Survivor Saga, which have not yet been adapted into anime.

Dr. Hanae Fujimoto, a media studies professor at the Tokyo Institute of Technology, said, “Announcing this series during the 40th anniversary underscores the enduring global appeal of the franchise.”

Entertainment analyst Lucas Reed of Anime Market Insights commented, “Animating the Galactic Patrol Prisoner Arc allows the series to engage both long-time fans and new audiences, expanding its transmedia presence.”

Anime critic Sarah Nguyen said, “This continuation demonstrates a commitment to maintaining Dragon Ball as a central franchise in global anime culture.”

Online fan reactions have reflected excitement and anticipation for the return of Dragon Ball Super to television.

Toei Animation has not yet confirmed a release schedule or distribution plans for international audiences.

Updates are expected in the coming months regarding broadcasting and streaming details.

Dragon Ball Super: The Galactic Patrol represents a significant expansion of the franchise’s canon and reinforces its global relevance nearly 40 years after its inception.

Author’s Perspective

In my analysis, Dragon Ball Super’s Galactic Patrol continuation exemplifies transmedia franchise monetization and long tail content engagement.

I predict global streaming platforms will adopt simultaneous multi region anime releases to capitalize on fan demand. Fans gain earlier access, while studios maximize IP value. Track adaptation arcs closely.
