Dave Bautista Officially Set as Kratos in ‘God of War’ TV Series

Dave Bautista has officially been cast as Kratos in Amazon Prime Video’s God of War series, replacing Ryan Hurst following an on set injury.

Bautista has closed his deal to portray Kratos in the fantasy drama, marking a major change for the PlayStation adaptation after Hurst was initially announced for the role in January 2026.

Hurst suffered a torn bicep while performing a stunt roughly four months into filming. The injury required surgery and was expected to push production delays into 2027, prompting Amazon MGM Studios and Sony Pictures Television to recast the central role.

The production is now being rebuilt around Bautista. According to the reports, no footage from Hurst’s original shoot is expected to be retained, meaning scenes featuring the previous Kratos will be reshot.

Frederick E.O. Toye, who directed the first two episodes with Hurst, is set to direct those episodes again. The series received a two-season order, with both seasons planned to film back to back.

Preparation for Bautista’s version is beginning this month, with production scheduled to start in Vancouver in mid October.

Bautista’s physical background makes the role particularly suited to his career. The former professional wrestler has also recently trained for Highlander, where he was required to bulk up for another demanding role.

Callum Vinson remains attached as Atreus. The wider cast includes Mandy Patinkin as Odin, Ed Skrein as Baldur, Max Parker as Heimdall, Ólafur Darri Ólafsson as Thor, Teresa Palmer as Sif and Sonya Walger as Freya.

The series follows the storyline of the two most recent God of War games, centering on Kratos and his 10 year old son, Atreus, as they travel to spread the ashes of Faye.

Their journey combines Norse mythology with the evolving relationship between a father trying to guide his son and a child challenging his father to become more human.

Ronald D. Moore serves as writer, executive producer and showrunner. Sony Pictures Television and Amazon MGM Studios are producing the series with PlayStation Productions and Moore’s Tall Ship Productions.

Production is expected to resume in Vancouver in October, with Bautista preparing to take over a role that anchors the series’ planned two-season story.
