Verizon Outage Disrupts Calls and Internet Services Across US

Verizon customers across parts of the United States reported wireless service problems Saturday, Aug. 8, according to outage reports tracked by Downdetector.

At about 4:16 pm ET, Downdetector showed 10,820 reports of Verizon problems.

The reports included disruptions to mobile phone service, mobile internet and 5G Home Internet. Verizon’s website said data, voice, text and wireless home internet services were limited in some areas of Delaware and that the company was working on a known issue.

Reports were concentrated across a broad area stretching from New York to Washington, D.C., with customers also reporting problems in cities including Philadelphia, New York City, Chicago, Minneapolis, Charlotte, Houston, Atlanta and Virginia Beach.

What Customers Reported

The most common complaint involved mobile phone service. Many customers said they were unable to make or receive calls, while others reported problems connecting to mobile internet.

Some Verizon users also reported seeing an SOS indicator on their iPhones. Other customers said they could still use text messaging and mobile data despite being unable to make calls.

Downdetector’s breakdown changed as reports increased. At approximately 4:30 p.m., 87% of reports were associated with mobile phone problems, while mobile internet and 5G Home Internet each accounted for about 5%.

Verizon was not the only telecommunications provider showing outage reports on Saturday. Downdetector also showed problems involving T-Mobile, AT&T, Xfinity and Straight Talk.

The Verizon disruption follows an earlier major outage referenced in the supplied reporting, when Verizon customers reportedly experienced around 10 hours without wireless service in January.

For customers, a wireless outage can affect basic communication, including phone calls and access to mobile internet. The reported disruption also affected Verizon’s 5G Home Internet service in some locations.

Customers experiencing problems can check Verizon’s network-status page for information about service availability at their address.

Verizon said it was working on a known issue affecting services in some areas. The supplied reports also state that Verizon had been asked for comment about the broader outage. No additional restoration timeline was provided in the supplied material.
