Five people were shot near Virginia State University dormitories early Saturday, leaving one victim in critical condition and prompting a campus lockdown.
The Virginia State University shooting occurred around 1:28 a.m. near the Quad Annexes, close to Boisseau Street and Third Avenue, according to campus police.
Chesterfield County police said officers responding to the incident found five people suffering from gunshot wounds outside university dormitories. All five were taken to nearby hospitals, with one victim’s condition later upgraded to critical.
The university said multiple suspects were involved but released no descriptions or other identifying information. Police have asked the public to avoid the area while investigators process the scene.
The campus was placed under lockdown following the shooting. VSU Police Chief David Bragg said at about 8:20 am that the lockdown had been lifted, although students and staff were urged to remain alert and avoid the immediate investigation area.
Chesterfield County Police are leading the investigation, with assistance from VSU Police, the ATF and the Hanover County Sheriff’s Office.
Virginia State University is a historically Black public university in Ettrick, about 24 miles south of Richmond, with roughly 5,700 students. Classes were scheduled to begin Monday, shortly after residence halls reopened.
