Marvel Studios has unveiled its new X-Men cast at D23, confirming Christopher Abbott as Professor X and setting the film for a May 5, 2028 theatrical release.
Marvel Studios has officially revealed the first major members of its new X-Men lineup, giving fans their clearest look yet at the cast for the upcoming Marvel Cinematic Universe film.
The announcement came Friday during Disney’s D23: The Ultimate Disney Fan Event in Anaheim, where Marvel Studios President Kevin Feige introduced the actors alongside director Jake Schreier.
The movie is scheduled to arrive exclusively in theaters on May 5, 2028. Christopher Abbott has been cast as Charles Xavier, also known as Professor X, the telepathic mutant who founded and leads the X-Men.
Sadie Sink will play Jean Grey, while Kit Connor takes the role of Scott Summers, better known as Cyclops.
The lineup also includes Samara Weaving as Emma Frost, Inde Navarrette as Rogue and Maya Boyd as Storm.
The announcement expands the previously reported casting information and establishes the central group that will lead Marvel’s new mutant era.
Adam Driver made a surprise appearance through a video during the presentation. He initially appeared to tease a different character before revealing that he would portray Nathaniel Milbury, described during the announcement as a sinister figure.
The material also identifies Driver’s role with Mr. Sinister. Feige said additional X-Men casting announcements are still to come, indicating that the D23 reveal represents the first major portion of the film’s ensemble rather than the complete roster.
The new movie represents a major transition for the X-Men franchise. The characters were previously controlled by 20th Century Fox before Disney acquired the company and its entertainment assets in 2019.
Fox’s X-Men film series began in 2000 and ultimately produced multiple films featuring two generations of performers. Patrick Stewart became closely identified with Professor X in the original series, while James McAvoy portrayed a younger version of Xavier in the later prequel films.
The most recent main X-Men movie, Dark Phoenix, arrived in 2019 with Sophie Turner as Jean Grey, James McAvoy as Professor X and Michael Fassbender as Magneto. The franchise later concluded its Fox-era theatrical run with The New Mutants in 2020.
Marvel’s new casting follows months of auditions and meetings involving Schreier and Marvel executives. A final round of testing reportedly took place after the Fourth of July holiday as the studio worked toward assembling its new mutant team.
The project gained further momentum after Schreier was hired to direct. Lee Sung Jin, creator of Beef, and Joanna Calo, co-creator of The Bear, were subsequently brought in to work on the screenplay.
Sadie Sink’s casting also connects the X-Men project to Marvel’s current slate. Feige introduced Sink at D23 after her appearance as Jean Grey in Spider-Man: Brand New Day was highlighted during the presentation.
The casting establishes Marvel Studios’ first dedicated X-Men team for the MCU after years in which the characters remained associated primarily with Fox’s separate film universe.
Professor X is particularly significant because the character has been one of the defining figures of the franchise since his comic-book debut in 1963.
Stewart portrayed Xavier beginning with the 2000 film, while McAvoy later played a younger version of the character across several installments.
The new interpretation by Abbott therefore begins a fresh chapter for one of Marvel’s most recognizable mutant characters while placing him within the MCU’s current continuity. The X-Men have already begun appearing around Marvel’s broader cinematic plans.
Patrick Stewart is expected to reprise Professor X in Avengers: Doomsday, scheduled for December, while several other performers from the earlier X-Men films are also returning for that project.
The franchise has additionally been referenced through recent Marvel projects involving former Fox characters.
Deadpool & Wolverine brought back several familiar mutant performers and introduced Channing Tatum as Gambit, who is also set to return in Avengers: Doomsday.
Marvel has also announced other major projects involving established comic-book properties, including a Ghost Rider movie starring Ryan Gosling and a third Black Panther film planned for December 2028.
