Stefon Diggs denies charges of strangulation, assault in Massachusetts

New England Patriots wide receiver Stefon Diggs is facing criminal charges in Massachusetts but denies allegations of strangulation and assault.

The case has drawn attention due to Diggs’ status as a prominent NFL player and his recent performances with the Patriots.

According to Dedham District Court records released Tuesday, Diggs is charged with felony strangulation or suffocation and misdemeanor assault and battery.

The incident occurred on December 2 in Dedham. No further details have been made public. A motion hearing was held Tuesday, with Diggs’ attorneys requesting to seal the court documents.

Legal experts indicate that such requests are rarely granted for high profile figures. “Public interest in cases involving well known athletes typically outweighs privacy claims,” said Jennifer Roman, a WBZ TV legal analyst.

Diggs joined the Patriots in March on a three year, $69 million contract after recovering from a torn ACL sustained with the Houston Texans. In his first season with New England, he has recorded 970 yards and 82 receptions along with four touchdowns.

Legal analysts note that charges of strangulation carry significant penalties in Massachusetts, including possible state prison time.

“Cases involving alleged domestic or interpersonal violence by public figures often receive intense scrutiny, both in court and in media coverage,” said attorney Marcus Bell, who is not involved in the case.

Experts also note potential NFL implications, including disciplinary action under the league’s personal conduct policy. Historically, NFL players charged with assault related offenses face varied outcomes.

According to the NFL Players Association, approximately 15 percent of active players face legal investigations each season, though convictions are less common.

Previous high profile cases have resulted in both suspensions and acquittals, highlighting the complex intersection of legal proceedings and league policy.

Local reactions in Dedham have been mixed. Community member Sarah Lopez said, “It’s shocking to see someone so visible in our community involved in legal issues.”

Another resident, David Kim, added, “We need to respect due process and see what the courts decide.” The Patriots issued a statement confirming awareness of the charges and noting that Diggs categorically denies the allegations.

Diggs is scheduled for arraignment on Friday, January 23. Should the Patriots advance in the NFL playoffs, the team’s AFC Championship Game is set for Sunday, January 25.

Legal proceedings are expected to continue through preliminary hearings, with potential impacts on both Diggs’ career and public perception.

Stefon Diggs’ case underscores the ongoing scrutiny of high profile athletes involved in legal matters. With arraignment pending and limited details released, the situation remains under careful observation by both legal authorities and the public.
